Dodgy Linking Tactics?

WARNING! Very boring post ahead!

I’ve often wondered when posting comments on peoples blogs, what is the correct, unwritten, accepted etiquet when it comes to the field WEBSITE. I have always listed http://www.webaffiliate.co.uk/blog as my website, not as an attempt to increase reads, not as an attempt to hide my other websites, just that the website is often relevant to the blogs I comment on as they’re all affiliate related.

So what happens if you’ve created a new website and would like a cheeky link or two in order to assist Search Engines quickly discover you? Do you list your new website in the section of your comment even though it may not have anything in common with the post or is this too cheeky? Personally when it comes to my blog, I’m not bothered as long as the comment is relative to the post or the comment isn’t simply written in order to get a link. However, this is something I have always shyed away from but am considering next time I post a comment, to start linking to a few of my other websites.

Is this commonly acceptable? What do you do or have you fallen asleep?

Personally, I use whichever website is closest to the blog genre. Naturally, for all affiliate blogs, I use my own name but I have made some comments elsewhere using the name that matches the website.

For instance, using your website http://www.adoptananimal.org.uk/ , if I were posting a comment on an animal related website, I would use the name “Adopt An Animal” and the URL http://www.adoptananimal.org.uk/ . So long as the comment is relative, I don’t suppose it matter what the name or URL is.

I allow all comments that relate to the posts. I don’t allow blatant spam within the body of the content nor do I allow those extremely short comments like “Great work” which are posted purely for link building purposes.

Interesting thought Chris. Whilst I’ve been involved with affiliate marketing for over 5 yrs, I’m only just starting to get into the mirky world of blogs so I’ll read the comments you get with interest.

I am with you on this one, I donâ€™t get stressed if people post links in the body of the post as long as the site is relevant and the comment has something to say and not just a link grab.

However… I have had one instance where one nice person left what was actually a useful comment then proceeded to leave about 5 link backs to various sites, needless to say I edited the comment before approving it which is in general something I donâ€™t like doing as I donâ€™t believe in censorship as long as it is not offensive.

As for the unwritten rules… not sure I generally done post addresses in the comments unless I am referring to the site but not really fussed either way.

I always see allowing links back to commentators as a kind of “reward”. As long as the comments aren’t spam then I don’t care where they link to, tbh.

I never used to bother putting a web site on a comment. i guess if the no follow option is on you wont get any google link juice anyhow.

I’m the same as David, I tend to match my website to the topic of the website. If there isn’t any real match then I’ll tend to just use my affiliate blog address.

If I am posting on affiliate related blogs I will list my affiliate blog field in an attempt to get added to their blogroll or some traffic to my blog.

If am looking to get some backlinks for one of my sites I will look for blogs in that niche and enter my name as the main key word of my site and the website as the url of the site I am trying to get a link for.

I am never sure whether the comments will get approved using this method as have key words as a name does look a bit spammy but if the comment is good that there should be no problem right?

It’s easy to comment on others website but we must follow Google’s link building tips. We need to place our links on same niche websites.
