What A God Send

Thursday evening, after going to the gym and packing for a 4 day trip to Egypt, I go to bed thinking “Must Not Forget My Memory Stick”. Quite important as it had contacts & contracts, hotel details, phone numbers etc. Simple! Only one thing to remember…

6.30am Alaram goes off and Snooze button is slapped.
7.00am Wake up in a bit of a rush not wanting to miss my flight (which I am renowned for).
9.00pm Realise that I have left my memory stick at home with all data on it.

Luckily and quite accidentally, the files I needed I happened to save in a folder called Hurghada, within a folder called My Dropbox. Thank goodness as the My Dropbox folder auto syncs with the web, and every computer I own, meaning all I needed was an internet connection to grab my files.

Luckily for me, Egypt seems better equipped for internet users than Australia! Sol Y MAr Ivory Suites is a new hotel only 2 mins walk away from my appartment (that’s still not complete… another story!). It provides free internet access meaning instant and free retrieval of documents that would have otherwise rendered the whole trip a waste of time.

So whats this post about? Well nothing really. Just a simply shout out about a free online storage facility thats so easy to use, even Frostie can!
Address: www.getdropbox.com
Storage: 2Gb
Likes: Its free and you can share files or folders with others based on permissions
Dislikes: I didnt think of it first

By the way, DropBox works with Windows, Mac and Linux so you can cross sync files no matter what flavour you prefer at home or work!

Looks good mate – just signed up now: I’ve got all me important stuff on a memory stick, and it ever buggered up I’d be royally screwed, so good to know it’s backed up!

    Can’t fault it John.

Future developments include selective synchronisation. So for example:
    Computer1 – Sync folders A B C
    Computer2 – Sync folders A B
    Computer3 – Sync folders A C

Also, when you join, if you refer a friend they AND you get an additional 250mb of space. Really is one of the easiest and most useful tools out there.

Think Windows Live Mesh is a free alternative.

Windows Live Mesh is an alternative but as I found out much to my expense last year, it is a painfully slow experience and wasn’t compatible with Linux. The speed really put me off along with the memory hungry GUI although I am sure they have improved this now.

Still after trying Mesh, Evernote and DropBox – DropBox for me wins hands down. By the way, this is also free up to 2Gb which is more than ample for my requirements :)

Drop box is just awesome as you say. It just sits there and does it’s job quietly which is exactly what I want it to do. And the mac/pc cross over is just sweet too, seeing as I exist between both worlds anyway
